Description:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed AMR among the top ten threats to global health, stating that “antibiotic resistance is becoming a public health emergency”. The majority of human antibiotic consumption originates in primary care with outpatients, including prescriptions by dentists, who are the second most active prescribing profession.
This interactive presentation will discuss antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), with a focus on a Canadian dental AMS strategy. Findings from focus groups of Canadian stakeholders and a multidisciplinary workshop held in October 2023, at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, will be discussed. The workshop resulted in the report "Taking a Bite Out of Antibiotic Prescribing: Developing a Sustainable Canadian AMS Strategy in Dentistry.” This report highlighted perceived barriers to appropriate prescribing, a number of challenges in changing behaviour and the lack of a unified national approach. Priorities for action and collaboration were identified. A new Dental AMS Toolkit, developed in collaboration with Choosing Wisely Canada, will be presented
